C-SPAN is a private, non-profit company, created in 1979 by the cable television industry as a public service. Our mission is to provide public access to the political process. C-SPAN receives no government funding; operations are funded by fees paid by cable and satellite affiliates who carry C-SPAN programming.

You may have noticed C-SPAN's programs do not have TV content ratings. C-SPAN programs are exempt from the rating systems set up by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

There had not been very much activity at the Federal Communications Commission regarding the "must carry" rule in nearly two years. However, on September 11, 2007 the FCC approved a version of the "must carry" rule called "dual must carry". Read more...
