After that unsuccessful bid, Kemp remained active in the Republican Party until his death from cancer in May of 2009.

A group of U.S. Navy ships, surprised and engaged by a superior Japanese battleship force, fought gamely and ultimately won the day, protecting Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s invasion fleet.
