C-SPAN Online is very sensitive to the privacy concerns of the visitors to its websites and is committed to meeting or exceeding fair information practices. This Privacy Statement applies to all of our websites, including C-SPAN.org, booktv.org, booknotes.org, americanpresidents.org, americanwriters.org, capitolhearings.org, broadbandc-span.org and tocqueville.org.

We do not collect personally identifying information about visitors except when that information is voluntarily offered. We may, for example, conduct a contest or a giveaway program that requires us to get back in touch with you, or we may ask for personally identifying information when conducting a survey of visitors to our sites as part of our effort to improve C-SPAN's online operations. Even when we ask for such information, it is used only to help us do a better job online and would not be sold or given to any unaffiliated third party for any reason.

You should be aware, however, that if you voluntarily post your email address or even your name and street address on one of our message boards or in a chat area, that information is available to any other person which means C-SPAN Online has no control over who may have access to it, nor do we have any control over how it is used.

You should also be aware that non-personally identifying information that you provide may be automatically collected through the use of small text files our web sites use to recognize repeat visitors. These files, called "cookies," also assist your ongoing access to and use of the sites. C-SPAN Online from time to time may collect statistics about how its websites are used, again in an effort to improve our services to users. That information would be aggregated and would not contain any personally identifying information about users.

By signing up for C-SPAN's email service, you are voluntarily providing us with your email address and additional information that we may request in order to provide you with this service. We will not share this or any other personally identifiable information with anyone except a trusted and reputable third party who may assist C-SPAN in providing the email service.

C-SPAN will send emails only to users who have expressed an interest in receiving them. You may request to receive emails from us ("opt-in") by registering and affirmatively checking the appropriate boxes on the C-SPAN Email Service Registration page.

Upon registering for C-SPAN's email service, your email address along with any other information or preferences you provide to us are stored in an email database. This information is collected, stored and used solely for the purpose of providing C-SPAN services.

In order to bring you more relevant content, C-SPAN may collect non-personally identifying information through pixel tags (also known as Clear Gifs or Web Beacons) in emails delivered to you. A pixel tag is a line of code which allows us to analyze our email campaigns and the general usage patterns of our email recipients. This information may be joined with other information you provide to C-SPAN, such as your email address, strictly for the purpose of enhancing and customizing the email service for you.

C-SPAN may also collect non-personally identifying information through the use of "cookies" in emails delivered to you. This information will again allow us to provide a customized and convenient experience to you, as well as enable accurate and meaningful reporting, which will allow C-SPAN to improve the email service in the future.

If at any time you would like to exercise your option to discontinue your subscription to C-SPAN's email service ("opt-out"), you may do so by clicking on the "unsubscribe" link located at the end of every C-SPAN Alert! email.
