SHIRLEY CHISHOLM & EDWARD BROOKE ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW

The Visionaries Collection of the National Visionary Leadership Project is an organization that works to recognize and preserve the wisdom of African American elders who have shaped American history. Cheryl Clark, the NVLP's CEO, joins us to discuss two recordings and the organization's mission.

First, hear a May 2002 interview with Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress and the first woman to run for the office of President of the United States. We'll also talk with Jo Freeman, author and political activist who was on the ballot in Illinois as a Chisholm delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention.

Finally, from October 2001, an interview with Edward Brooke, the first African American to be popularly elected to the United States Senate. And we'll talk with Richard Norton Smith, Scholar-In-Residence at George Mason University, who worked as a staffer for Sen. Brooke.
