LBJ White House Tapes Past Programs

 
 
This week on C-SPAN Radio's LBJ Tapes, hear some of President Lyndon Johnson’s phone calls from July, 1964. The Democratic National Convention is coming up in August and many of these calls are about convention and campaign issues. You’ll also hear conversations about problems for the poverty bill. LBJ talks to congressional leaders, cabinet members and key White House aides. He also chats with California Governor Edmund Brown, whose son Jerry would also win that office.

Listen to some of President Lyndon Johnson’s phone calls from April 1966. LBJ talks about Vietnam with Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and with U.S. Ambassador to the UN Arthur Goldberg. He also discusses legislation, the federal budget and appointments with Congressional leaders Mike Mansfield, Everett Dirksen and Wilbur Mills. And you’ll hear conversations about a promotion for the father of a current U.S. Senator.

This program is taken from phone calls during July, 1964. LBJ discusses the poverty bill and the presidential campaign with House Majority Leader Carl Albert, White House Press Secretary George Reedy and congressional aide Larry O’Brien. LBJ also talks about civil rights issues with NAACP executive director Roy Wilkins and fields questions from a publisher about his personal business holdings and worth.

In this special program, listen some of President Lyndon Johnson’s 1966 calls with Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz, AFL-CIO President George Meany and Walter Reuther, President of the United Auto Workers. Topics include a minimum wage bill, strikes against the railroads and airlines and anti-war demonstrations at a U-A-W convention. You’ll also hear LBJ complain about the lack of labor support for his legislative agenda and for Democratic Congressional candidates.
