The House opened the 116th Congress and elected Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as its speaker. She was sworn in as speaker by Representative Don Young (R-AK), and she then administered the oath of office to the new members en masse. In her address to members, the speaker laid out her party’s agenda, which includes strengthening the middle class and addressing climate change through the creation of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. She also vowed the House would “debate and advance good ideas no matter where they come from.” Speaker Pelosi also quoted from Ronald Reagan’s final speech as president in which he said, “If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost.” Speaker Pelosi previously served as speaker from 2007-2011 and was the first person to return to the position since Sam Rayburn in 1955.

During this session, the government was in day 13 of a shutdown over President Trump’s demand for funding to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall. close
