The Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control held a hearing to examine the role of shell companies in facilitating transnational crime, such as fentanyl trafficking. Key topics included bad actors using such companies for money laundering and cartels using registered U.S. aircraft to smuggle illegal drugs. The Corporate Transparency Act was passed in 2021, which is intended to outlaw anonymous U.S. shell companies.

Former member of Congress and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) discussed current political issues at Georgetown University. He spoke about why he voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results following the attack on the U.S. Capitol and why he still supports 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in light of Mr. Trump's alleged role in the attack. Moreover, he claimed that his removal as House speaker was motivated by personal animus from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), after not stopping an ethics complaint against Mr. Gaetz for alleged sexual relations with a minor. Former Rep. McCarthy was interviewed by Mo Elleithee, executive director of Georgetown's Institute of Politics and Public Service and former campaign spokesperson for Hillary Clinton.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified on the president's fiscal year 2025 budget request before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee. He responded to Sen. John Kennedy's (R-LA) questions on if he was purposely allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country to help President Biden's reelection prospects, calling such notions "preposterous." Also, the subcommittee's chair, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), criticized congressional Republicans for not holding any votes on a bipartisan border security bill he helped negotiate. The bill stopped being considered after 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump told fellow Republicans he wanted to run on the issue of immigration. This hearing came one month after Secretary Mayorkas was impeached by the Republican-led House of Representatives for his alleged mishandling of the border. The Democratic-led Senate had yet to consider an impeachment trial.

University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Enrollment Vice Provost Rachelle Feldman told lawmakers they're facing an "enrollment crisis" due to the Education Department's delayed rollout of the new federal student aid application called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). She and other college enrollment and financial aid advocates voiced their frustration during a public hearing before the House Education Subcommittee on Higher Education. Lawmakers on a bipartisan level also expressed their disappointment and anger over the issues experienced by families, students and colleges alike. The new application was mandated by the FAFSA Simplification Act. The law aimed to make the FAFSA process simpler for families and students. Additionally, it also expanded eligibility for federal Pell grants to more students.

The discussion was organized and held at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC.
