In addition, Mr. Bannon's lawyer David Schoen said that this case must go before the Supreme Court as it raises a dynamic separation of powers issue.

He said FBI data showed a decrease in violent crime throughout the country in 2023, which included the steepest decline in homicides in over 50 years, and that this trend continued in 2024. The attorney general added, however, that 2023 marked a 10-year high for the number of officers assaulted or injured by firearms and paid tribute to those who lost their lives to gun violence. He then described specific initiatives the Justice Department undertook to combat such crime, such as using new technologies to pursue gun traffickers. ATF Director Steven Dettelbach delivered introductory remarks.
