Supreme Court Oral Argument in Chiafalo v. Washington
1 hour, 13 minutesOn its final day of a special May session due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Supreme Court heard oral argument via teleconference on a case concerning Washington electors and whether they can cast a vote for a person who did not win the state's presidential popular vote. In 2016, Peter Chiafalo served as an elector. While Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the state, Mr. Chiafalo and two other electors cast their Electoral College ballots for Colin Powell. This vote resulted in a $1,000 fine for each of them. Washington law requires electors to vote for the person who won the state's popular vote. Mr. Chiafalo and the electors filed suit challenging the law, however, they lost in state courts. The justices have through June to issue a ruling.

FDA Holds News Conference on Authorization of Pfizer Vaccine
45 minutesFood and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn held a news conference to announce the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The commissioner said the FDA had moved quickly to review the data, while ensuring the integrity of the scientific process. "I will absolutely take this COVID-19 vaccine, pending availability and distribution, because I had complete trust and confidence in the FDA's career staff's evaluation," he said. FDA Biologics Director Dr. Peter Marks also joined the commissioner to answer reporters' questions about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine for particular groups, including children, people with severe allergies, and pregnant and breastfeeding women. In response to a reporter's question, Dr. Hahn said the representations in the press that he was threatened to be fired by the White House if the vaccine authorization did not come by a certain date were inaccurate.
