Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced the board would keep its policy interest rate unchanged, at 5.25-5.50%, during a news conference in Washington, DC. He further said that the process of lowering inflation to the Fed's target rate of 2% had "a long way to go," and implied that future rate hikes were possible, saying too much economic growth or persistent labor market tightness "could warrant further tightening of monetary policy." Moreover, Mr. Powell said third-quarter economic activity expanded at a strong pace and was well above expectations, citing data pertaining to the GDP, strong job growth, and a low unemployment rate.
Social Security Administration (SSA) commissioner nominee Martin O'Malley testified at a confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee. He made his pitch of why he was qualified for the position, emphasizing his skills as a manager and his service-oriented mindset, which he said were demonstrated in his experiences as Maryland's former governor (2007-15) and Baltimore's former mayor (1999-2007). He also promised to help improve efficiency, morale, and customer service at the SSA. Former Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) also appeared before the committee and vouched for Mr. O'Malley's qualifications.

President Biden delivered remarks and signed an Executive Order regarding the regulation and privacy standards of artificial intelligence (AI) during an event with government and business leaders hosted at the White House. Among the requirements of The Executive Order are the use of Defense Production Act to require transparency in safety testing of AI systems, increased safety standards, consumer privacy, and civil rights and equity guidelines. At the top of his remarks, the president applauded the United Auto Workers and the Big Three automakers for reaching, what he called, a "historic agreement" in agreeing to a new contract for auto workers.
