Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) and other House Republicans called for Columbia University President Minouche Shafik to resign amid pro-Palestinian protests taking place on the campus. He was joined by House Education Committee Chair Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and some members of the New York congressional delegation at the school in New York City. Speaker Johnson decried instances of antisemitism against Jewish students, which he alleged were happening at Columbia and other universities. He and his Republican colleagues were booed by protesters throughout their remarks. The protests at Columbia began in the middle of April when protesters set up an encampment of dozens of tents and demanded the university divest from Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Moyle v. United States, a consolidated case on whether a federal law allowing emergency abortion care at hospitals receiving Medicare funding preempts Idaho's ban on nearly all abortions. Under the 2020 Defense of Life Act there are very limited exceptions for abortions in the state. One can only occur if it is "necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman" or in cases of rape or incest. This law took effect in August 2022 after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The Biden administration filed suit against Idaho arguing its abortion law conflicts with the 1986 Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) which requires emergency care including abortions if needed. The justices have through June 2024.
