In this first portion of the event, former U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Mark Green delivered remarks. He reported that there were 130 million refugees in the world, caused by various forces like extreme weather and authoritarian regimes, and said it was important to help developing nations become self-reliant. Mr. Green is president and CEO of the Wilson Center and served as a Republican U.S. representative for Wisconsin (1999-2007).

Maryland's 2024 Democratic U.S. Senate candidates, Congressman David Trone and Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, participated in a forum to debate top issues in the state. The forum focused on issues including Maryland's crime rate, a ceasefire in Gaza and the Key Bridge collapse. Congressman Trone has represented Maryland's sixth district in the U.S. House since 2019. Maryland's former Republican Governor Larry Hogan is running for the GOP nomination. This candidate forum was hosted at the University of Baltimore Schaefer Center.

House lawmakers held a moment of silence for New Jersey Represenative Donald Payne Jr., who died from health complications on April 24, 2024. Representative Payne served for six terms. He will lie in state in the Essex County Historic Courthouse in Newark, NJ.

Ralph Puckett Jr. to the Capitol," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) during remarks at the Capitol where the late Korean War veteran was lying in honor. Others in attendance included Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).. Col. Puckett, who received the Medal of Honor from President Biden in 2021, passed away at the age of 97 on April 8, 2024, at his home in Columbus Georgia.
Reverend William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign, met with faith leaders and advocates to discuss a mass march on the nation's capital. Set for June of 2024, Rev. Barber said the march would advocate for poor and low wage workers in an effort to eliminate poverty and promote living wages. Organizers talked about their plan to march from the National Mall to polling locations to advocate for expanded voting rights, which Reverend Barber says includes statehood for the District of Columbia. Topics included messaging by trusted sources, community violence intervention, the impact of gun violence on youth, and pros and cons of gun policies.
