President Biden Speaks at Gun Violence Prevention Conference
26 minutesPresident Biden spoke at Everytown for Gun Safety's "Gun Sense University"-- an annual conference bringing together gun violence survivors, volunteers, and advocates for training on organizing efforts--in Washington, DC. He talked about the impact of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was passed nearly two years previously in the wake of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The president also called for additional policies to be enacted, including an assault weapons ban and universal background checks. He was introduced by Julvonnia McDowell, an advocate and mother whose son died by gun violence. A pro-Palestinian protester interrupted President Biden during his remarks, and the audience drowned her out, but the president said, "They care. Innocent children have been lost," referring to civilian deaths in the Israel-Hamas war.

Coast Guard Commandant Testifies on Sexual Assault & Harrassment at Academy

Linda Fagan testified on the Coast Guard Academy's alleged mishandling of sexual assault investigations during a public hearing before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. She said, "our failure to share the report with Congress was a mistake that prevented appropriate oversight and further eroded trust," alluding to the Coast Guard's "Operation Fouled Anchor" investigation, which ultimately determined the academy mishandled dozens of sexual assault allegations from the late 1980s until 2006. This investigation happened from 2014 to 2020, but it was not disclosed to Congress or the public until June 2023. Admiral Fagan said the concealment of this report was "a mistake," but not evidence of misconduct, and that she remained committed to proper accountability. She is the Coast Guard's first female commandant and began her tenure in June 2022.

Federal Reserve Chair Holds News Conference

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced the decision during a news conference in Washington, DC. The U.S. decision is opposite of Europe, with the European Central Bank recently cutting its rates. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets eight times a year to make monetary policy decisions, such as rate hikes and cuts based on economic data and conditions. The next meeting is scheduled for July 30, 2024.
