Former Sen. Pat Toomey Discusses Chevron Deference Ruling

Pat Toomey (R-PA) discussed the impact of the Supreme Court striking down the "Chevron deference" doctrine, which held that courts defer to federal agencies to interpret ambiguous laws. He discussed the implications of the ruling for the three branches of government and why he thought the Chevron doctrine was problematic, saying federal agencies overstepped their authority. However, former Sen. Toomey said he was "not optimistic" about Republicans decreasing the size of the executive branch if the party gains control of Congress and the White House. The Chevron doctrine, which was established by Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council in 1984, was struck down by Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo in 2024. The American Enterprise Institute hosted this event in Washington, DC.

Secret Service Director Testifies on Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump
4 hours, 38 minutes"The assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades," said U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle as she testified on the attempted assassination of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. She testified before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Members from both parties, including the committee chair and ranking member, called for her to resign. During the hearing she answered questions on events leading up to the rally and directly following. She also addressed concerns about the security perimeter, whether security requests for former President Trump had been granted amid increased international and domestic threats, and the timeline for when the shooter was identified as a suspicious subject and later threat.

Secretary of State Speaks at Aspen Security Forum
45 minutes"I believe we're inside the 10-yard line and driving toward the goal line in getting an agreement that would produce a ceasefire, get the hostages home, and put us on a better track to trying to build lasting peace and stability," said Secretary of State Antony Blinken when asked about ceasefire negotiations in the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza during a conversation at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. When asked about stopping Iran's nuclear ambitions, the secretary said though Iran has not developed a nuclear weapon, they are "probably one or two weeks away" from producing fissile material for a nuclear weapon. Other topics addressed included the war in Ukraine, support for Ukraine's potential NATO membership, challenges from China, and freeing U.S. hostages wrongfully detained abroad, such as Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkocich who was recently sentenced to 16-years in a Russian prison.
