Justices Hear Case on Domestic Abusers & Gun Access
1 hour, 33 minutesSupreme Court ruled 8-1 upholding a federal ban on guns for those with domestic violence protective orders against them. They said any individual deemed by a court "to pose a credible threat to the physical safety" of another person "may be temporarily disarmed." Chief Justice John Roberts authored the court's majority opinion. Justice Clarence Thomas was the sole dissent. Oral argument was heard back in November 2023. This case dates to 2020 after a Texas court issued a two-year order and revoked the gun license of Zackey Rahimi. Ms. C.M. requested it after a 2019 incident where he allegedly threatened her and pushed her inside a car. Mr. Rahimi also allegedly fired his gun at a witness. After this incident he reportedly continued making gun threats against Ms. C.M. Officials prosecuted him for violating a federal statute banning guns while under a domestic violence order. Mr. Rahimi claimed his Second Amendment rights were violated and filed a lawsuit.
