Other speakers included Senate leaders Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY), and a mother of one of the late service members, Coral Doolittle. Ms. Doolittle said about her son and the others killed, "Their love for this country was greater than the threats they faced from the enemy." 169 Afghan civilians also perished in the attack, which happened at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

Atty. Gen. Garland Addresses Justice Dept. Workforce
32 minutesAttorney General Merrick Garland defended the Justice Department for upholding the rule of law under his tenure. He said, "Over the past three-and-a-half years, there has been an escalation of attacks on the Justice Department's career lawyers, agents, and other personnel, that go far beyond scrutiny, criticism, and the legitimate and necessary oversight of our work. These attacks have come in the form of conspiracy theories, dangerous falsehoods, efforts to bully and intimidate career public servants by repeatedly and publicly singling them out, and threats of actual violence." He then said it was "dangerous and outrageous" that the department's employees had to endure such attacks, but they did not "bend to politics" nor "break under pressure." His remarks came during an address to the entire Justice Department workforce as well as to federal attorneys who gathered in Washington, DC for their annual conference.
