U.S. Court of Appeals for DC Circuit Hears Oral Argument on TikTok Ban Law
2 hours, 5 minutesThe U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit heard oral argument in TikTok Inc. v. Merrick Garland, a lawsuit brought on by Chinese company ByteDance over a law that forces it to either sell its ownership of TikTok in the U.S. or have TikTok be banned in the United States. Congress passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act in April 2024, which was signed into law by President Biden that same month. Attorneys Andrew Pincus and Jeffrey Fisher, who respectively represented ByteDance and content creators, argued that the law was unconstitutional under the First Amendment. Justice Department appellate attorney Daniel Tenny, however, argued that TikTok presented national security concerns with regard to data collection and content manipulation.

National Economic Council Chair Discusses the Global Economy

Small Business Administration Admin. Testifies in Oversight Hearing

Several Republicans pressed Ms. Guzman about a link on the SBA's website to vote.gov, a website that directs visitors to information about registering to vote in all U.S. states and territories. They questioned the intention of providing the link, alleging partisan motivations. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) and other Democrats defended it, and Rep. Phillips said, "I think it is a responsibility of administrations--Democratic and Republican--to encourage people to participate" in the democratic process and elections. Before hearing business began, Chair Roger Williams (R-TX) congratulated Ranking Member Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) on her recent portrait unveiling amid Hispanic Heritage Month. Rep. Velazquez is the first Puerto Rican woman to serve in the U.S. Congress.

President Biden Remarks at the Economic Club of Washington, DC
