Laphonza Butler (D-CA) was sworn in to the U.S. Senate by Vice President Kamala Harris. She was joined by her partner, Neneki Lee. Second gentleman Doug Emhoff and California’s other senator, Alex Padilla (D), also attended the ceremony. Ms. Butler is the first Black LGBTQ person to serve in the Senate; she was appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) upon the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). close
