Senate Democratic members of the Environment & Public Works Committee meet with reporters to talk about President Trump's sweeping changes to carbon emissions and climate change policy.
During his daily briefing with reporters, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the White House took no action to prevent former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates from testifying before the House Intelligence Committee as part of the committee's investigation into the president's wiretapping claims and possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. He also took questions about energy and environmental policy, the Supreme Court nomination of 10th Circuit Appeals Court Judge Neil Gorsuch, what's next for health care legislation, and the administration's hopes for bipartisan cooperation from the Senate.
The House Ways and Means Committee began a markup of H. Res. 186, a measure requiring the Treasury secretary to provide tax returns and other financial information of President Trump covering the 2006 through 2015 tax years. The resolution was introduced by Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), and was derided by the committee's chair, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), and other Republican members as a political exercise in opposition of President Trump. After about an hour and a half of debate, the committee recessed so members could vote on the House floor.
A House Judiciary subcommittee held a hearing on border security and immigration enforcement. Witnesses included a former immigration judge and immigration policy experts who discussed santuary city policies and federal enforcement operations.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) was joined by fellow party leaders in a brief news conference following a meeting of the entire House Republican Caucus. The leaders said they would continue to pursue a replacement of the law known as Obamacare, but would not give a timeline in which they expected it to happen. The party is instead moving forward with other priorities, including an overhaul of the nation's tax code, they said. Speaker Ryan also took a few questions from reporters, and in response to one said House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes (R-CA) did not need to recuse himself over his handling of an ongoing investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election and potential connections to the Trump campaign.
