County of Los Angeles v, Mendez
56 minutesThe U.S. Supreme Court sided with the police overturning a lower court ruling awarding $4 million in damages to a homeless couple who sued after being shot 15 times in a backyard shack by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies. The Supreme Court unanimously decided that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' "provocation rule" is not consistent with the Court's excessive force decisions. The rule held that police who use force that's not deemed excessive can still be held liable if they provoked the victims to respond in a way that makes the officers reasonable fear for their safety. In 2010 Angel Mendez and Jennifer Lynn Garcia were a homeless couple living in a shack in a friend's backyard. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies looking for a wanted parolee, searched the friend's house and the small shack behind it. They entered the shack, without a warrant and without knocking. Murr v. State of Wisconsin
1 hour, 8 minutesThe Supreme Court in a 5-3 ruling upheld Wisconsin land-use regulations controlling how private property owners can use or sell their property. This case centered on the Fifth Amendment's Takings Clause and whether adjoining lots of land, owned by the same person or group, should be considered separately or together when deciding if land-use restrictions amount to a regulatory taking requiring the government to pay the landowners. The Court ruled that "no regulatory taking occurred here" so the Fifth Amendment's Takings Clause which requires "just compensation" did not arise in this case. In 1960 the Murr family purchased a 1.25-acre lot on the St. Croix River in Wisconsin and built a recreation cabin on it. Three years later, the family purchased the adjacent lot of the same size as an investment. Zoning regulations adopted in 1975 required lots be a certain net size to be developed and if not then they are deemed "substandard." Both of the Murr's lots are considered "substandard"

SCOTUS - Expressions Hair Design v. Schneiderman
1 hour, 4 minutesThe Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a New York state law which prevents businesses from telling shoppers they are imposing a surcharge on credit card purchases is a speech regulation. New York businesses challenging the law want to be able to tell customers that they will charge extra for using a credit card. Under the law, it's okay for a business to reduce the price if the customer pays cash, but against the law to raise the same price if a customer pays with a credit card. Chief Justice Roberts in his opinion for the Court wrote, "The law tells merchants nothing about the amount they are allowed to collect from a cash or credit card payer. Instead, it regulates how sellers may communicate their prices." The case now heads back to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City for further review in light of the Supreme Court's decision. The Second Circuit Court originally upheld the law without addressing the First Amendment speech issue raised by retailers.
