Airline industry executives, including United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, testified at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing on customer service concerns following recent incidents on domestic flights. Members asked about industry practices and what the airlines represented were doing to improve the overall customer service experience. The committee took periodic five-minute breaks over the course of the hearing, and this first portion includes the witnesses' opening statements.
United Airlines President Scott Kirby and trade organization leaders testified before a Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation subcommittee on the current state of airline travel and ways to improve customer service. Mr. Kirby apologized for the recent incident involving a passenger being dragged off a United flight and vowed improve customer service. Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Ginger Evans called the United incident "completely unacceptable." She said Chicago aviation officers will no longer be allowed to board aircraft unless there is a medical emergency or security threat. Other issues raised by senators included airline fees, industry competition, overbooking of flights and treatment of airline employees.
Earlier today, the House debated two bills related to health care. The first would eliminate a provision allowing members of Congress and their staff to keep protections under the Health Care Law. The chamber then debated an Obamacare Replacement Bill. That measure would eliminate individual insurance mandates, and refund tax credits based on age and income. Other key provisions include: ending new enrollment in Medicaid expansion as of December 31, 2019, repealing health care taxes in 2018, defunding Planned Parenthood for one year and keeping the provision allowing adults up to 26 years of age to stay on their parents' health insurance plans.

The two leaders faced off before the May 7 runoff election in a heated debate that lasted more than two hours. This was the first time in modern French history that no candidate from a mainstream party advanced to the runoff round. Ms. Le Pen, who supports a French exit from Europe, clashed with Mr. Macron over the way forward in the European Union and how to combat terrorism in the country. The Senate Judiciary Committee convened a hearing to examine ways to address the increasing number of religious hate crimes in the United States. The special counsel for religious discrimination within the civil rights division at the Justice Department testified. Other experts including the police chief of Arlington, Texas Police Department and a religious hate crime victim also appeared before committee members. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) chairs the committee while Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) serves as the ranking member.
