The House Science, Space & Technology Subcommittees on Oversight and Research & Technology held a hearing on the impact of the recent global ransomware attack and ways to strength the government's cybersecurity posture. The cyberattack, known as "WannaCry," began on May 12, 2017, and infected more than 300,000 users in some 150 countries. Witnesses testifying included National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Information Technology Director Charles Romine who outlined his agency's cybersecurity framework. In addition, the CEO of Kryptos Logic discussed his company's efforts to halt the ransomware attack.
The House today approved a resolution by voice vote commending the Capitol Police and other first responders for their actions at the GOP Congressional Baseball practice yesterday, where five people were injured, including Congressman Steve Scalise who remains in critical condition at a Washington Hospital. Afterward, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy spoke about what happened and tonight's baseball game.
President Trump's nominees to be the next chair of the Council of Economic Advisers and deputy secretary of Housing & Urban Development Department (HUD) appeared before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee for their confirmation hearing. Both candidates were asked about the president's proposals for economic growth and budget cuts to housing programs such as the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) chairs the committee while Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) serves as the ranking member.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) held her weekly briefing where she answered several questions related to the shooting in Alexandria that critically injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and several others. She was asked more specifically about additional security for congressional members and the comments made by some Republicans about the alleged negative rhetoric used by Democrats. Mrs. Pelosi called the accusation "outrageous" and urged members to have the debate on rhetoric another day. Later, she congratulated the 2017 NBA champions, the Golden State Warriors, and said their families were welcome to come to Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held his fifteenth annual question and answer session in Moscow, where he answered dozen of questions from a live audience, by telephone, text, e-mail and live video. His session lasted close to four hours. During this 45-minute portion, Mr. Putin answered questions specifically on U.S. policy, relations with Ukraine, and Russia's role in Syria. He commented on former FBI Director James Comey's testimony on Capitol Hill, saying that Mr. Comey put himself in a "vulnerable position" and called his actions "unprofessional." Mr. Putin also talked about the upcoming G20 summit where he'll meet President Trump, the U.S. withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement and the state of the Russian economy.
