51 minutesRussian President Vladimir Putin held his fifteenth annual question and answer session in Moscow, where he answered dozen of questions from a live audience, by telephone, text, e-mail and live video. His session lasted close to four hours. During this 45-minute portion, Mr. Putin answered questions specifically on U.S. policy, relations with Ukraine, and Russia's role in Syria. He commented on former FBI Director James Comey's testimony on Capitol Hill, saying that Mr. Comey put himself in a "vulnerable position" and called his actions "unprofessional." Mr. Putin also talked about the upcoming G20 summit where he'll meet President Trump, the U.S. withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement and the state of the Russian economy.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ), the committee's chair, chastised the two witnesses for not yet delivering a comprehensive strategy for winning the ongoing war in Afghanistan, saying it was difficult to appropriate funding for a military with no definitive plans.

During this session, Speaker John Bercow was re-elected as speaker and customarily "dragged unwillingly" back to the speaker's chair -- a custom that dates back hundreds of years when there could be consequences if the Speaker disagreed with a king. Following Mr. Bercow's re-election, Prime Minister May and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn delivered speeches and welcomed the newly-elected members to the House of Commons.

PHH Corporation v. CFPB
1 hour, 44 minutesThe full D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral argument in PHH Corporation v. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a case that could determine the future of the consumer protection agency created by the Dodd-Frank law. This Court is reviewing a three-judge panel decision that declared the single-director structure of the agency unconstitutional. PHH Corporation is a New Jersey mortgage lender that sued the consumer bureau after it was fined $109 million for allegedly accepting kickbacks from mortgage insurers. PHH Corporation is arguing that the structure of the agency diminishes the president's power under Article II of the Constitution to faithfully execute the laws. The director, currently Richard Cordray, serves a term of five years that doesn't expire until 2018 and can only be removed by the president "for cause" not at will like cabinet members. The D.C. Sen Aging Cmte. - Military Caregivers

Members heard from witnesses including former Senator Elizabeth Dole who talked about the work of her foundation that advocates for those who care for wounded veterans, along with actor and director Ryan Phillippe who's an ambassador for the foundation's initiative called Hidden Heroes. They were joined by women and the husbands they care for who shared their stories of the struggles they face. The hearing was led by committee chair Susan Collins (R-ME).
