He talked about Amtrak's efforts to boost the reliability of services in and out of New York City's Penn Station, its competition with airlines along the Northeast Corridor, and the challenges of running a system along tracks owned mostly by freight railroads. President Trump later defended his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer, saying that "most people would have taken that meeting." Though Ms. Jackson later apologized for the remarks, the lawmakers at the press conference said it was part of a pattern of dismissive behavior toward sexual assault victims by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and others in the Education Department.

A report released by the Government Accountability Office found that the VA denies more than 80% of claims for benefits in Gulf War associated illnesses. The report also found that ninety percent of VA medical examiners have no training on how to conduct Gulf War illness exams. Witnesses included representatives from the Veterans Affairs Department, the Government Accountability Office and veterans' advocates groups.

An amendment to the defense programs bill related to climate change failed 185-234. The measure offered by Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) would have expressed the sense of Congress on climate change and national security, and required the Defense secretary to provide a report on vulnerabilities to military installations and combatant commands from climate-change-related effects.
