President Trump Announces Afghanistan Policy

While he didn't disclose a number he stressed that U.S. support to Afghanistan is not a blank check and America expects to see reforms and results. The president also talked about how neighboring countries, Pakistan and India, can help as well. Joined by the vice president and first lady, the president delivered his address to the nation before U.S. servicemembers at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia. Several members of his cabinet were also in attendance.

Former immigration judge Andrew Arthur discussed his paper, "The Massive Increase in the Immigration Court Backlog, Its Causes, and Solutions". Its key finding is that the doubling of the backlog from 2006 to 2015 was not due to an increase in the number of cases but a doubling in the length of time it takes each case to be resolved.

He also talked about what the administration expects from Pakistan in working toward peaceful reconciliation. Just before taking questions from reporters, Secretary Tillerson noted that North Korea had not launched any missles or made any "provocative acts" since the U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted seven sanctions resolutions in early August 2017. He said he thought it was important to take note of that and that he was pleased to see that the regime in Pyongyang had "demonstrated some level of restraint that we've not seen in the past."
