After paying tribute to a U.S. servicemember recently killed in action, Sen. Kaine spoke at length about his proposal to limit the use of U.S. military force against Iran. He was followed by Washington Democrat Patty Murray, who also spoke in favor of the measure. Then, Majority Whip John Thune spoke against the measure, saying that the strike against Gen. Soleimani was justified.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other Democratic senators held a news conference shortly after the vote on the Iran War Powers resolution. The resolution passed 55-45. Sen. Schumer told reporters that it was a "rare day" in the Senate and congratulated the bipartisan support for the resolution. President Trump has said he plans to veto the resolution which aims to stop the president from use of military force against Iran without congressional approval. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), author of the resolution, said the government owed it to our troops and their families to give "careful deliberation" of war and cautioned President Trump to not veto the resolution.
The House passed, 232-183, a resolution to remove the deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The measure now goes to the Senate. Congress approved the ERA in 1972. Thirty-five states ratified it by 1978 (needs 38), one year before the deadline. However, five states rescinded their ratification by then. Congress extended the deadline to 1982. Nothing changed before that deadline. Since then, three more states approved ratification, including Virginia which became the 38th state in January of this year.

The secretary fielded questions about the administration's $4.8 trillion budget proposal as well as other issues that fall under the Treasury Department's purview, including economic growth and the impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was signed into law in December 2017.

Family and friends gathered for a memorial service for PBS NewsHour anchor and journalist Jim Lehrer. He passed away at the age of 85 on January 23, 2020. The National United Methodist Church in Washington, DC conducted the service. Lee Cullum, Robin MacNeil and Michael Beschloss were among the many speakers who reflected on Lehrer's life and career.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected President Trump's Middle East peace plan during a speech before the U.N. Security Council in New York City. "This plan will not bring peace or stability to the region," said President Abbas. Following his remarks, Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Kelly Craft delivered statements. During the meeting, both President Abbas and Ambassador Danon said they were willing to negotiate a plan for Middle East peace.

Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg made his sixth visit to the Old Dominion State, speaking at a campaign organizing event in Richmond, Virginia. He spoke to supporters at the event, which was interrupted by protesters at times. Notably, Mr. Bloomberg,said the New York Police Department's use of stop-and-frisk tactics in neighborhood policing during his time as the New York City mayor were a "mistake." The comment came after audio of Mr. Bloomberg speaking favorably about stop-and-frisk during a 2015 forum in Aspen, Colorado was leaked earlier in the week. He was in Richmond as part of an effort to shore up support from voters in Super Tuesday primary states.

Members questioned the officials on how the U.S. is working with Mexican government to combat drug and arms trafficking by cartels, the current humanitarian crisis in the country, and the handling of cases around American citizens being killed in Mexico.
