Chief Justice John Roberts authored the opinion for the court. The justices heard oral argument in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, a case that challenged the legality of the city's anti-LGBTQ discrimination provision in contracts with foster care agencies. This case dates back to 2018. One of those agencies, Catholic Social Services (CSS) sued alleging violation of their free exercise and free speech rights. Philadelphia stopped referring children to CSS after they learned the agency would not be placing children in the care and homes of same-sex couples.
