Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller Announces U.S. Troop Reduction in Afghanistan & Iraq
9 minutesActing Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced the U.S. would draw down troops in Afghanistan and Iraq to 2,500 in each country by January 15, 2021. The acting secretary, who replaced former Defense Secretary Mark Esper the week prior after he was fired by President Trump, said he had spoken to U.S. allies, NATO leaders and members of Congress about the decision. He thanked the troops who had served in the protracted wars and said the U.S. military would retain the capabilities to intervene in the region if necessary. Acting Secretary Miller did not take questions from the media after making the announcement.

Secretary Pompeo also announced that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement would be recognized by the U.S. as being anti-Semitic. "We want to stand with all other nations that recognize the BDS movement for the cancer that it is," Secretary Pompeo remarked.
