The bill includes resuming construction on the U.S.-Mexico border wall, more funding for additional border patrol agents, new limits on migrant asylum seekers, and requiring employers to use E-verify on employees. Speaker McCarthy also addressed the impending debt limit deadline, saying he and President Biden would meet next week to further discuss it, and that their respective staff members were also working on the matter.

Congressional Leaders on White House Debt Limit Meeting

At the time of this meeting, no further progress had been made on negotiations in regard to raising the limit. Leader McConnell said default was not an option, and Speaker McCarthy criticized the White House for waiting over three months to negotiate with Republicans about the debt and the federal budget. House Minority Leader Jeffries retorted against this claim, saying the White House proposed a budget in early March and House Republicans did not propose a budget until late April, which he and Leader Schumer said was too partisan for consideration. All leaders said talks regarding the debt limit were ongoing.

Rep. Santos Remarks After Pleading Not Guilty to Federal Charges

The 13-count indictment was made public in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, which charged Rep. He called the charges "a witch hunt," and said he would prove his innocence and continue to seek re-election in 2024.
