The panel of witnesses included Dario Amodei, co-founder & CEO of Anthropic, an AI developer. Health scholars, advocates, and executives testified on increasing antimicrobial resistance before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee on Primary Health. Topics included incentivizing private companies to innovate new antibiotics, supply chain issues, the impact of climate change on antimicrobial resistance, and the link between human and animal health. In addition, witnesses called for more awareness regarding the issue.
Members of the conservative Freedom Caucus called on Republicans from both chambers of Congress to rein in federal spending during a news conference on Capitol Hill. When asked if there was concern over a government shut down if spending bills are not approved, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) said, "I don't believe you'll be looking at a government shutdown I am not worried about a government shutdown at this point."
President Biden and Vice President Harris both spoke out against what the president called attempts to "bury history" during a ceremony to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument. Florida recently announced a new education curriculum, one that included teaching students that some slaves benefitted from slavery. Emmett was just 14 years old when he was lynched by white supremacists in 1955. His mother, Mamie, became a civil rights activist following his killing. For his funeral she insisted on an open casket funeral to show the world what happened to her son. The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument will be in Mississippi and Illinois.
