The case centers on South Carolina's 1st congressional district (CD1). According to the 2020 Census it's underpopulated while its neighboring 6th district is overpopulated. To even things up, the Republican-controlled legislature moved more than 50,000 people from the 6th to the 1st district and 140,000 people from the 1st to the 6th district. The legislature argued, the movements kept CD1 a Republican safe district while also maintaining Black voter percentages. The South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP filed suit alleging the movements resulted in splitting up thousands of Black voters and diluting their voting power. A lower court agreed. The appeal to the nation's highest court followed. The justices have through June 2024 to issue a ruling.
