Justices Hear Case on Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy & Opioid Claims
1 hour, 46 minutesThe Supreme Court heard oral argument in a case concerning the bankruptcy of Purdue Pharma and its potential impact on opioid victims' compensation. Purdue Pharma, once owned by the Sackler family, made painkiller OxyContin. As addiction rapidly spread, victims filed lawsuits, which numbered in the trillions of dollars. In 2019, the Sackler family gave up control of Purdue Pharma, and the company filed for bankruptcy. A reorganization plan deal included a trust for victims' compensation with the Sackler family contributing $6 billion dollars. In return they'd be released from all opioid-related claims, and future litigation. The U.S. Trustee Program, which oversees bankruptcy cases, opposed the deal and filed this appeal.
