The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to narrow the interpretation of a federal statute used to charge January 6 defendants with obstruction. The nation's high court ruling could impact hundreds of January 6 defendants' cases as well as Special Counsel Jack Smith's election interference case against former President Donald Trump. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the court's majority opinion. Justice Amy Coney Barrett inked the dissent. With this ruling, the case is also headed back down to the lower federal court for additional proceedings. The justices heard oral argument in Fischer v. United States back in April 2024. Joseph Fischer, a January 6 defendant who filed the lawsuit, challenged a criminal statute used by the federal government to charge him with obstructing an official proceeding during the Capitol attack.

President Biden held a meeting in the Oval Office with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala amid ongoing security issues in the Middle East and Europe. Czech Prime Minister Fiala reflected on seeing Russian tanks in his city streets as a child and President Biden reflected on his time as a Senator when he advocated for the Czech Republic to be in NATO. Both leaders tied their reflections to the role Ukraine aid plays in European security, with President Biden urging Congress to pass the national security supplemental to ensure aid to Ukraine.

He was questioned by subcommittee members on a variety of topics including holding China and Mexico accountable for their role in the fentanyl crisis, the Justice Department's new rule for firearm dealers, voter identification, and hiring additional police officers and attorneys. When specifically asked about the Justice Department's special counsel report into President Biden's handling of classified documents and accounts of President Biden's mental fitness, Attorney General Garland said, "I have watched him expertly guide meetings of staff and cabinet members on issues of foreign affairs and military strategy and policy in the incredibly complex world in which we now face." He continued to say, "I could not have more confidence in the president."

Caroline Atkinson, former deputy national security adviser for international economics under President Obama, joined other international economic policy advocates for a discussion on strengthening global development and financial cooperation. They discussed the role of the World Bank and other multilateral development banks (MDBs), enhancing the role of private industry, the need for increased cooperation among world powers, and the impacts of global challenges on development, such as climate change and migration. The Center for Global Development hosted this event.

House lawmakers presented articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate. This makes Secretary Mayorkas the second U.S. secretary to be impeached by the U.S. House, and the first in 150 years. Impeachment managers included Mark Green (R-TN), Michael McCaul (R-TX), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Ben Cline (R-VA), Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), Michael Guest (R-MS), Harriet Hageman (R-WY), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Laurel Lee (R-FL), August Pfluger (R-TX), and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) convened the impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Members were sworn in as jurors and then signed the oath book. Majority Leader Schumer asked for unanimous consent for a time agreement on an impeachment trial resolution. Senator Schmitt (R-MO) objected to Senator Schumer's motion. Majority Leader Schumer then raised a point of order that the first impeachment article was unconstitutional.

"As suspected, the Republicans proved this afternoon that this whole impeachment was nothing more than a political show," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) during a press conference following the Senate's vote which killed the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He went on to say, "we felt very strongly that we had to set a precedent - that impeachment should never be sued to settle policy disagreements." The Senate leader also touched on border security, saying Democrats welcome a "serious debate" with Republicans over border security.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified on the president's 2025 budget request during a public hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The hearing occurred one day after the Democratic-controlled Senate dismissed impeachment articles against the secretary. A few Republican senators criticized the move during the hearing. Others focused on topics related to border security, fentanyl interdiction and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewal application process.

President Biden gave remarks in Pittsburgh on his administration's efforts to strengthen labor unions and steel manufacturing jobs. He announced a series of actions they're taking to reinforce support for United Steelworkers including ensuring fair competition with Chinese steel companies. The U.S. is currently investigating anti-trade practices by the Chinese government regarding steel and aluminum. The president said if anti-trade practices are confirmed he will call on U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to triple the tariffs for steel and aluminum imports from China. President Biden's trip to Pittsburgh comes as he made his way across the Commonwealth in his bid for reelection.

Ukrainian human rights activist Oleksandra Matviichuk and National Democratic Institute (NDI) President Tamara Cofman Wittes discussed democracy and the Russia-Ukraine war at an event co-hosted by NDI and the Women's Foreign Policy Group in Washington, DC. The secretary, along with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown and Defense Comptroller Mike McCord, appeared before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to testify on the president's 2025 budget request. Secretary Austin also stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine and the threat Russian President Vladimir Putin poses if Ukraine loses the battle. Other topics discussed included modernization efforts, submarine and shipbuilding, healthcare for servicemembers and families, and challenges posed by China, Iran and North Korea.
