"There is nothing that can shut me up ... not a prison built or jail built that will ever shut me up. All victory to MAGA," said Steve Bannon as he and his lawyer David Schoen spoke to the press following a federal judge ruling that Mr. Bannon must report to prison on July 1st to serve a sentence for defying a Congressional subpoena from the House select January 6th committee. Mr. Bannon stated that this was only about shutting down the MAGA movement and shutting down former president Donald Trump. In addition, Mr. Bannon's lawyer David Schoen said that this case must go before the Supreme Court as it raises a dynamic separation of powers issue.

Attorney General Merrick Garland discussed efforts to combat violent crime at the Chiefs of Police Executive Forum on Crime Guns, hosted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Washington, DC. He said FBI data showed a decrease in violent crime throughout the country in 2023, which included the steepest decline in homicides in over 50 years, and that this trend continued in 2024. The attorney general added, however, that 2023 marked a 10-year high for the number of officers assaulted or injured by firearms and paid tribute to those who lost their lives to gun violence. He then described specific initiatives the Justice Department undertook to combat such crime, such as using new technologies to pursue gun traffickers. ATF Director Steven Dettelbach delivered introductory remarks.

FBI Director Christopher Wray testified on the agency's priorities and 2025 budget request before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science. The director addressed the recent budget cuts to the bureau's 2024 budget, saying the budget comes in "almost $500 million below what the FBI needs just to sustain our 2023 efforts this could not come at a worse time." Director Wray highlighted the areas impacted by the budget cuts, which include national security, violent crime prevention, and workforce development. Several topics were addressed, including border security, fentanyl interdiction, election security, cybersecurity and ransomware challenges, and threats posed by China, such as intellectual property theft.

"I've come here today to do what Republicans in Congress refuse to do -- take the necessary steps to secure our border," said President Biden as he announced executive action on border security. He continued to say, "This ban will remain in place until the number of people trying to enter illegally can be reduced to a level that our system can effectively manage." In addition, the president discussed additional administrative actions through Homeland Security and the Department of Justice and urged Congress to pass legislation on border security. Following his remarks, President Biden responded to a reporter's question on whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was "playing politics" regarding the Israel-Hamas war. President Biden replied, " I don't think so. He's trying to work out a serious problem that he has."

The Boeing Starliner launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, en route to the International Space Station (ISS). This historic test flight is Boeing's first-ever crewed mission into space. The spacecraft is carrying two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. Ms. Williams is the first woman to pilot a new spacecraft on its first crewed flight to space. Both Wilmore and Williams will spend eight days in space at the ISS.

In regard to the Israel-Hamas war, they welcomed the news of four Israeli hostages who were rescued from Hamas, and President Biden said, "We won't stop working until all the hostages come home and a ceasefire is reached." The presidents also discussed their ongoing support for Ukraine amid Russia's invasion and other shared priorities. This event occurred during President Biden's state visit to France, which included a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. They did not take questions from reporters.

The leaders reflected on their nations' longstanding alliance, going back to the time of the U.S. Revolutionary War, and through World War II and the present era. Also, President Macron gave recognition to 100-year-old American World War II veteran Harold Terens, an attendee of the dinner, who got married that day in Normandy amid the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, testified on his role in overseeing the U.S. response to COVID-19 before the House Oversight and Accountability Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. He spoke on the success of the vaccine rollout and addressed several claims that he called "seriously distorted," including accusations he "tried to cover up the possibility the virus originated from a lab." Commerce Department CHIPS Program Office Director Michael Schmidt stressed the importance of U.S. leadership in chip manufacturing and innovation during a conversation he participated in at the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC. He and Chris Miller, professor and author of "Chip War: The Fight for the World's Most Critical Technology," pointed to the coronavirus pandemic supply chain issues and shortages as reasons why the U.S. needs to produce its own semiconductor chips and not rely on foreign sources. In 2022 Congress passed and President Biden signed into law the CHIPS Act. The law aimed to bring back and boost semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S.

A panel discussed preventing nuclear proliferation in Iran and the Middle East at the Arms Control Association's annual meeting in Washington, DC. The association's policy director, Kelsey Davenport, said Iran was closer to developing a nuclear bomb than ever before, and she recommended the U.S. take actions to enhance monitoring of Iran's nuclear program. Also, former acting Undersecretary of State for International Security Thomas Countryman delivered remarks on charting paths for nuclear arms control and disarmament around the world.

The Senate Aging Committee and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee held a joint hearing on improving governmental services for veterans and their caregivers. Witnesses included a veteran and a caregiver who shared their experiences of receiving benefits from the Veterans Affairs Department, as well as stakeholders from veteran advocacy organizations. All of the witnesses gave their recommendations on how VA programs can be improved, such as giving Social Security credit to caregivers and urging passage of the Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act.
