Federal Reserve Chair Holds News Conference

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced the decision during a news conference in Washington, DC. The U.S. decision is opposite of Europe, with the European Central Bank recently cutting its rates. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets eight times a year to make monetary policy decisions, such as rate hikes and cuts based on economic data and conditions. The next meeting is scheduled for July 30, 2024.

The comments came during a press conference with the Qatari prime minister, who was meeting with Secretary Blinken in Doha and earlier in Jordan to try and finalize a ceasefire deal in the ongoing Israel-Hamas War. Secretary Blinken and the Qatari leader bemoaned the lack of final progress, but expressed optimism a deal could still be reached.

They pointed to several reasons for this, such as a "patriarchal, hierarchic, and insular culture" and other factors. They also recommended "real cultural and structural change," including the appointment of an independent third-party to monitor change at the FDIC. At the time of this hearing, FDIC Chair Martin Gruenberg already announced he would resign, and Christy Goldsmith Romero was reported as a possible replacement. FDIC board members Michael Hsu and Jonathan McKernan, who appointed the law firm that oversaw the investigation, also gave testimony.
