Defense Secretary Holds 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Pentagon

No words can take away your grief, no amount of time can make sense of the worst terrorist attack in American history," said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as he reflected on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America during a remembrance ceremony at the Pentagon. Also delivering remarks was Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown. American Airlines Flight 77 struck the southwest corner of the Pentagon at 9:37am ET. Sixty-four people on board the plane and 125 people in the Pentagon died.

Pres. Biden & VP Harris Participate in Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Pentagon
9 minutesOn the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, President Biden and Vice President Harris participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. They were joined by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown. On Sept. 11, 2001, five al-Qaida hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 77 and crashed the airliner into the western side of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. As a result 64 people died who were in the plane, including the terrorists, as well as 125 in the Pentagon. The attack happened on the 60th anniversary of the start of the Pentagon's construction.

Former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Testifies on His State's COVID-19 Response

Andrew Cuomo (D) testified on his administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a directive he issued to admit and readmit patients and residents infected with the coronavirus before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. The governor defended his record against committee Republicans who said his policies resulted in the unnecessary death of thousands of nursing home residents across New York state. Mr. Cuomo asserted the deaths were from community spread and infected workers during a time when testing was not widely available. He also pointed to the lack of pandemic-related policies and leadership of former President Trump as contributing factors to deaths attributed to the pandemic.

The mayor shared his story of growing up deaf and how the legislation impacted his life and allowed him to become the first deaf mayor to be elected. Signed into law in July of 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act grants people with disabilities equal rights in the workplace or in schools, including on transportation and in public places.

Hearing on Protecting Solvency of Social Security

Commissioner O'Malley appeared before the committee to testify on ways to protect the solvency of Social Security. A variety of topics were addressed, including the agency's 2025 budget request, budgetary constraints, and customer service challenges. Also testifying before the committee were policy and retirement advocates who discussed the importance of protecting retirement security.
