French President Macron Addresses Joint Session of Parliament
1 hour, 45 minutesFrench President Emmanuel Macron delivered his first major speech at a joint session of the French Parliament which several media reports described as a U.S. State of the Union-style address. Mr. Macron broadly described how he would restore faith to France by combating terrorist threats, strengthen French borders, and re-structure Parliament. The 39-year-old leader promised to hold annual speeches before Parliament to lay out his political agenda. Immediately following Mr. Macron's 90-minute address, France 24 panelists provided speech analysis. French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe was set to address Parliament the day after President Macron's speech. Traditionally, France's prime minister, as head of government, reports to Parliament to outline the specifics of the legislative agenda, not the president, who serves as head of state.

'Heritage Foundation - Supreme Court Review

Panelists discussed the high court's decision on trademarks, redistricting and the impact new Justice Neil Gorsuch may have on the Court. The new Supreme Court term begins on the first Monday in October. This discussion was hosted by the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC.

Supreme Court - Buck v. Davis
56 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 6-2 that racial bias played a role in Duane Buck receiving a death sentence. The court held that Buck demonstrated ineffective assistance of counsel and is entitled to relief. The court's ruling allows the Texas death row inmate to argue for a new sentencing hearing before a lower court. Buck, who is black, was convicted for the murders of his former girlfriend and her friend as her young children watched. The heart of this case rested on an expert witness presented by Buck's own attorney who testified that being black increases the probability Buck would commit acts of violence in the future. Chief Justice John Roberts in his opinion for the court wrote, "When a jury hears expert testimony that expressly makes a defendant's race directly pertinent on the question of life or death, the impact of that evidence cannot be measured simply by how much air time it received at trial or how many pages it occupies in the record. Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer 2
58 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that Missouri's denial of public funds to resurface a church's school playground violates the First Amendment's Establishment Clause. This is the first time the Supreme Court has ruled that government funds must provide money directly to a church. The Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia in Missouri owns and operates a preschool learning center that incorporates religious teachings into its programs. Missouri has a state program that provides grants to resurface gravel playgrounds with a rubber surface made from recycled tires. Trinity applied for one of the grants but was denied because the state's constitution barring public funds from going directly or indirectly to a religious entity. Chief Justice Roberts in his opinion for the Court wrote, "The exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution all the same, and cannot stand."
