Hearing on Redistribution of Excess Military Equipment
49 minutesThe House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness held a hearing on the Pentagon's 1033 Program, which was created as part of the 1997 National Defense Authorization Act to allow state and local law enforcement agencies to purchase excess military tactical, transport, and surveillance equipment at a reduced cost. The hearing focused on efforts the Defense Department was making to strengthen the requirements for law enforcement officials to designate appropriate officials to obtain and transport the excess equipment. That was the result of a Government Accountability Office report which criticized the Pentagon of not having strict enough procedures for bringing new participants into the program.
