Senate Hearing on Freight and Passenger Rail Service During Pandemic and Beyond

Amtrak President and CEO William Flynn testified that passenger usage plummeted 97% in March of 2020, dropping to 4,000 passengers per day. According to Flynn, the significant drop in passenger usage continues and has caused the service to reduce daily service to three times a week service in some regions. Mr. Flynn explained the impact this has had on Amtrak's funding, and requested additional congressional funding to supplement shortages. Representatives from the freight rail industry and those who rely on freight rail testified as part of a second panel related to non-passenger traffic on America's rails and discussed challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic and ways to continue to improve service.
