Federal Gov't Officials Testify on Post-Pandemic Services Backlog
2 hours, 54 minutesFederal government officials from the Social Security Administration, National Archives, and State Department testified on post-pandemic services backlogs before the House Oversight and Accountability Subcommittee on Federal Government Operations. Several Republican lawmakers pressed them on whether remote work is a cause of the backlogs and all three said no. The officials also stressed not all federal employees are eligible to work from home. Rena Bitter, the assistant secretary of state for consular affairs, said the increase in demand for passports and other travel documents is the main reason for its backlog. She did reassure the subcommittee the agency is working as quickly as possible, and delays are expected to diminish as the year continues. Other topics at this hearing included modernization efforts, funding levels for each of the agencies and staffing issues.

Hearing on Transgender Rights

Witnesses included 16-year-old transgender girl Harleigh Walker, who spoke about discriminatory laws and treatment against transgender youths in her home state of Alabama; Dr. Ximena Lopez, who discussed facts concerning gender-affirming care for minors; and former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, who shared her experience of competing against transgender woman Lia Thomas in a 2022 NCAA championship match, tying for fifth place with her. Ms. Thomas also won the 500-yard freestyle event in the tournament, becoming the first openly trans woman champion in the NCAA women's division.

Transportation Official Testifies on Highway Infrastructure Projects
