Hearing on Abuse at Youth Residential Treatment Facilities

Also, several abuse victims who resided at these facilities were present but did not testify. Abuse at these centers came to national prominence in 2020 after a Michigan teen died at one of them. Socialite Paris Hilton has also raised awareness about this issue and has advocated on behalf of victims to congressional lawmakers.

Campaign 2024: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Foreign Policy at Nixon Foundation

He began his remarks largely on constitutional rights and free speech. He criticized President Biden for what he called "political censorship" on social media after he took office amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Kennedy also spoke on foreign policy comparing the U.S. to other democracies around the world saying, "our government targets its own people with propaganda, surveillance and censorshipwe've lost faith in ourselves as a good people and a great nation." Following his remarks he took questions from the audience on a range of questions including voter ID and immigration. Kennedy's remarks at the Richard Nixon Library and Museum came two months before the 50th anniversary of Richard Nixon's resignation from the presidency.

Microsoft President Testifies on Cybersecurity Failures

In 2023, Chinese hackers breached email accounts at several federal agencies, including the Commerce and State Departments. Lawmakers questioned Microsoft on their operations in China and discussed actions Microsoft has taken to prevent future cybersecurity threats from China, Russia and other nation-states. Additional topics included artificial intelligence (AI), prioritizing security in product design, partnering with the federal government to prevent threats, and mitigating thousands of daily cyber and ransomware attacks.

Supreme Court Hears Challenge to Gun Bump Stock Ban
1 hour, 26 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 6-3 striking down a Trump-era bump stocks ban implemented in response to a 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival. Justice Clarence Thomas authored the majority's opinion. He wrote, "a semiautomatic rifle equipped with a bump stock is not a 'machine gun' because it cannot fire more than one shot 'by a single function of the trigger.'" Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote the dissent warning of "deadly consequences." She said, "when I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck." She went on to add, "a bump-stock-equipped semiautomatic rifle fires 'automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.'" The justices heard oral argument in February 2024. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) issued the ban in 2018.

Mr. Goss said Congress will need to keep Social Security solvent by either reducing benefits by 25%, increasing revenue by 33%, or doing a combination of these actions. Various ideas were discussed to keep Social Security and Medicare solvent, such as raising taxes for those making more than $400,000 versus raising the retirement age from 67 to 70 and cutting benefits. Social Security and Medicare are estimated to become insolvent by 2033 and 2036, respectively, if no actions are taken by Congress.

Vice President Harris Remarks on Sexual Violence
12 minutes"We must speak truth about the prevalence of conflict-related sexual violence against women and girls, and men and boys," Vice President Kamala Harris said in her remarks as she condemned sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas following the October 7th attack on Israel. The vice president noted the need to improve the system used to document conflict-related sexual violence saying, "we have committed as an administration to move from only condemnation to consequence." The administration announced an initiative called Dignity in Documentation, which it says will help improve documentation of conflict-related sexual violence to hold those who commit conflict-related sexual assaults accountable. The vice president's remarks were held in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, DC.
