A panel of South Korean experts discussed the implications and results of the May 9 presidential election at an event hosted by the Korea Economic Institute of America. Panelists focused on how South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, will foster new relations with China, Japan and the United States. On North Korea, one panelist said President Moon will pursue every peaceful policy option for an agreement. The president has stated that he will advocate for more dialogue with the North Korean leader, a position that stands in stark contrast to that of his predecessor, impeached President Park Guen-hye.
House Democratic leaders held a news conference to discuss the latest on the investigation into Russia and the 2016 election. Several members, including House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Adam Schiff (D-CA), stressed the need to establish an independent and bipartisan commission. On the issue of impeachment, Rep. Schiff told reporters that no one should rush to embrace the removal of a president and that the facts of the case are most important at this time. Democratic Caucus Chair Joseph Crowley (D-NY) said no person is above the law, adding Speaker Ryan needs to move forward with an independent investigation.
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao gave her first testimony before Congress on the Trump administration's plan to address the nation's infrastructure challenges. She said the $1 trillion proposal will include $200 billion in federal funding and private sector investment and will address areas including safety, modifications for smart technology, the streamlining of permit approvals and the needs of rural communities. She spoke before a hearing of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chaired by John Barrasso (R) of Wyoming.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) this morning called for President Trump to be impeached for obstruction of justice. He said the president fired FBI Director James Comey because the FBI was investigating the Trump campaign's ties to Russia and that "our democracy is at risk."
