Historian and author Elizabeth Cobbs talks about the women who served overseas as telephone operators in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I. She also explores how their service impacted the women's suffrage movement in the U.S., and she discusses the six decade fight by these women to be recognized as military veterans. The National Archives in Washington, DC hosted this event.
Photo archivist Lynn Smith talks about the color home movies belonging to President Herbert Hoover and First Lady Lou Hoover that she recently discovered in the collection of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum. The films show Herbert Hoover fishing in a boat and playing Medicine Ball on the White House lawn. Lou Hoover is seen walking in the White House Rose Garden and playing catch with the family dogs. The films were shot on an early form of color film and were donated by the Hoover's grandson, Herbert "Pete" Hoover III, who is seen as a baby in these movies.
White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney appeared before the Senate Budget Committee to discuss President Trump's proposed budget for fiscal year 2018. While Republican committee members generally praised the proposal and its goal of balancing the federal budget over a 10-year period, Democrats spoke against it. Ranking member Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said it was a budget "of the billionaire class, by the billionaire class, and for the billionaire class."
The CEO of Target stores and former CEO of Walmart testified on Capitol Hill on tax policy, specifically the border adjustment tax. They appeared before the House Ways and Means Committee along side tax policy experts. Committee members are examining recommendations from various stakeholders as they attempt to move forward with the Trump Administration's efforts to overhaul the tax code. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) chairs the committee while Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) serves as the ranking member.
The House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces held a hearing on U.S. military space assets and potential national security threats. Gen. John Raymond, commander of Air Force Space Command, was among those testifying.
The Transportation Department Inspector General said the completion date and cost of the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) NextGen project to modernize and change to a satellite-based air traffic control system is still uncertain. The inspector general's comments came during testimony before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Other aviation experts also testified on these modernization efforts. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA) chairs the committee while Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) serves as the ranking member.
Reps. Nanette Barragan (D-CA) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) spoke about the challenges they encountered running for their seats as women and as minorities at an event hosted by the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC. The two were featured panelists in one of two panels focused on women in politics. Representatives from Emily's List, Three Point Strategies and Higher Heights for America organizations participated in the second panel. They outlined efforts to encourage women to run for public office.

Ms. Jones is also the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Virginia School of Law and the first African American to serve on the American Bar Association's Board of Governors.
