Hearing on USA Freedom Act Reauthorization
2 hours, 6 minutesThe Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on reauthorizing the USA Freedom Act of 2015, which bans the bulk collection of private records. Among the witnesses testifying were officials from the FBI, Justice Department and National Security Agency (NSA). The USA Freedom Act also extended several government surveillance authorities including the "roving wiretap," "business records" and "lone wolf" provisions originally included in the USA Patriot Act. In addition, intelligence officials called on Congress to renew the NSA's call detail records program, which allows the government to obtain certain telephone metadata records from telecommunications providers in order to identify contacts of suspected terrorists. The NSA recently announced it was suspending the program for technical and operational reasons.

He also recounted his friendship with President Barack Obama, and talked about why he entered the 2020 president race later than most candidates and amid a large field of competitors.

Hernandez v. Mesa Oral Argument
1 hour, 6 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the parents of a Mexican national cannot sue a U.S. border patrol officer for damages after that officer shot and killed their son in a 2010 cross-border incident. Justice Samuel Alito authored the majority opinion. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg delivered the court's dissent. Oral argument was heard in Hernandez v. Mesa in November 2019. Sergio Hernandez was 15 years old at the time and playing with friends in a culvert that separates El Paso, Texas and Mexico. Officer Jesus Mesa, Jr., detained one of the friends on the U.S. side of the culvert, but Hernandez ran back to the Mexico side. The officer, who was still on the U.S. side, fired his gun at Hernandez across the border. One shot hit him in the face and killed him. The teen's parents filed a lawsuit against several people including the officer, alleging that their son's Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights were violated.
