Riyad Mansour condemned Israel's attacks and accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of sacrificing Palestinian and Israeli lives for "political selfish survival" and that he was a "sworn enemy of the two-state solution." Israel's ambassador, Gilad Erdan, criticized the U.N. for invoking the article, saying it was not applied to previous atrocities. The U.S. official at the meeting, Robert Wood, said the council failed to condemn Hamas's initial October 7 attack and that the U.S. would not support a ceasefire, though added that Israel must minimize harm to civilians. The council later voted on a ceasefire resolution, which was vetoed by the U.S.
