Transportation Dept. Officials Testify on Infrastructure Law
3 hours, 40 minutesTransportation Department officials, including Transportation Under Secretary for Policy Carlos Monje and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Robin Hutcheson, testified on oversight of infrastructure investment during a hearing before a House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee. Several topics were addressed, including electric vehicle charging station infrastructure, the impact of speed limiters on large commercial trucks, high speed and light rail investments, and safety standard requirements for vehicles and crash mitigation. When asked about the recent recall of more than 2 million Tesla vehicles due to safety concerns with the autopilot system, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Acting Administrator Ann Carlson said Tesla agreed to the recall because "its software system may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse" and Tesla will be working on "remedies to address that problem."

Executive Branch Officials Testify on Improving the WHO

This hearing happened amid ongoing concerns from U.S. lawmakers that the WHO was improperly influenced by China during the COVID-19 pandemic, including on the WHO's report on the origins of COVID-19. The witnesses recommended new amendments for the International Health Regulations, which apply to the WHO, such as rapid and transparent information-sharing. The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic held this hearing.

Federal Reserve Chair Holds Press Conference
50 minutesThe Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady for the third time after its monetary policy meeting. Chair Jerome Powell announced the decision during a news conference in Washington, DC. He also acknowledged that it appears interest rates are likely at or near peak but stressed future hikes are not completely off the table. The Federal Open Market Committee, an arm of the Federal Reserve, is tasked with setting monetary policy and meets eight times annually. The committee is scheduled to meet next on January 30 and 31, 2024.

Arab-Islamic Foreign Ministerial Delegation Discusses Impact of Israel-Hamas War
58 minutes"The only way that we will ensure security for all of us in the region is through a pathway to a two-state solution that gives security to all," said Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, during a conversation hosted by the Wilson Center on the impact of the Israel-Hamas War on the Middle East. The foreign minister was joined in conversation by Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah Al-Safadi, and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. Several topics were addressed, including support for an immediate cease-fire in the region, humanitarian concerns and protecting innocent Palestinians, the prospect of achieving peace in the Middle East, and violations of international law and the responsibility of the United Nations to help put an end to the conflict. They also discussed the displacement of Palestinians, and the role Arab countries have in restoring Gaza after the conflict ends.
