The House Oversight and Reform Committee held a hearing on voting rights in low income and minority communities. Testifying before the committee were the president of Repairers of the Breach Rev. William Barber, civil and voting rights attorney Marcia Johnson-Blanco, and two of the founding members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Diane Nash and Thomas Jenkins. During the hearing, witnesses discussed various forms of voter suppression, including strict voter photo ID laws, elimination of early voting, closing of polling places in minority communities, racial gerrymandering, lack of paper ballots, excessive voter purges, and long lines. During the hearing, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) asked the witnesses a series of questions equating Second Amendment rights to voting rights, finally asking if the right to keep and bear arms should be restored to non-violent offenders who have served their time.
