"In this moment, we must be crystal clear. We stand with Israel," said President Biden as he delivered remarks from the White House on the Hamas attack from the weekend. With Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken standing behind him, President Biden shared there is no higher priority than the American hostage recovery efforts. In addition, he denounced terrorism and announced a carrier strike group had been deployed to the Mediterranean for deterrence purposes stating, "any country thinking of taking advantage of the situation, I have one word, don't."
While Israel could defend itself against attacks from Hamas, the U.S. would be offering military and diplomatic aid Secretary of State Antony Blinken said as he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered statements to the press after meeting in Tel Aviv, Israel. Secretary Blinken also said at least 25 Americans had been killed in the attacks and subsequent fighting, which had begun five days prior. In his brief remarks, Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked the U.S. for its ongoing support.
"The U.S. has Israel's back," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at a press conference with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant following a meeting at HaKirya in Tel Aviv, Israel. Secretary Austin was meeting with his Israeli counterpart as the country was on the precipice of an expected ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in retaliation for a land, air, and sea invasion of Israeli territory by Hamas. The two leaders delivered statements reiterating the strength of the U.S.-Israel alliance and also took some questions from reporters.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) referred to Republican speaker-designee, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), as "the chairman of the chaos caucus an extremist extraordinaire." The minority leader, along with House Democrats, delivered remarks from the Capitol steps on the state of Congress as Republicans still have no new leader after the ousting then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Leader Jeffries went on to criticize Rep.
