Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) delivered remarks from the Capitol steps after being elected and sworn in as speaker of the U.S. House. He said House Republicans went through "a little bit of suffering" and "character building," but they were ready to deliver results for the American people. Rep. Johnson was elected to the speakership by the House on a party-line vote, 220-209. In the events leading up to this, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted as speaker on October 3, which was initiated by Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL) and supported by seven other House Republicans. The Republican majority struggled for more than three weeks to agree on Rep. McCarthy's replacement, with speaker nominees Reps. Steve Scalise (LA), Jim Jordan (OH), and Tom Emmer (MN) all failing to obtain enough support from fellow House Republicans. In particular, Rep. Jordan's nomination was brought to the full House for votes, but it failed three times.
