"One thing is absolutely clear, America is at a breaking point with record levels of illegal immigration," said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) during a news conference on border security priorities near the U.S.-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas. The speaker criticized the administration's border policies and referred to the border crisis as "a disaster of the president's own design." Speaker Johnson was joined at the press conference by 64 House Republicans, including Homeland Security Committee Chair Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) and Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) whose district includes Eagle Pass.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) gave the 2024 State of the Commonwealth address from the capitol in Frankfort. He praised his state's economy and touted more than $28.7 billion in private-sector investments. Gov. Beshear also discussed the state's recovery and revitalization efforts following floods and tornados in recent years. In addition, he highlighted his goals for the upcoming year and applauded the legislature's efforts to pass bipartisan legislation for marijuana, sports betting, and historical horse racing games.

White House Budget Director Shalanda Young discussed government funding and the possibility of a government shutdown, during a breakfast conversation with reporters hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. While responding to a question on House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) floating the idea of direct budget negotiations with the White House while direct negotiations are happening in the Senate, Director Young called the request "not serious" adding "It's a long trip down to the White House to do something that could be done right next door." Other topics discussed included funding a supplemental request for the southern border, election security, inflation and the economy, and military assistance to Israel and Ukraine.
